Mafeking a place in History
In the final years of the nineteenth century, southern Africa stood at the centre of a struggle shaped by empire, ambition, migration and competing visions of political power. From the expansion of British influence and the emergence of the Boer republics to the discovery of gold and the growing tensions between Britain and the Afrikaner states, the region was moving toward a conflict that would reshape its history. In October 1899, that conflict erupted into the Second Boer War. At the small frontier town of Mafeking, British Colonel Robert Baden-Powell found himself responsible for defending an isolated garrison against a much larger Boer force. What followed was a remarkable 217-day siege in which soldiers and civilians endured bombardment, hunger, disease and uncertainty while Baden-Powell employed deception, improvisation and audacity to keep the besiegers at bay.
